According to the department of labor, creativity is under threat.  WIth corporations trying to keep productivity up while stretching the workload over fewer people- creativity can be lost within the organizational tasks that can cloud any creative thinking.    When you do not have creativity you have the threat of losing innovation which will stifle the continual development in different categories.

Corporations can actually harm their business productivity if they do not foster an environment of creativity. By focusing strictly on the processes and the tasks that need to be performed fast and more efficient, the willingness of employees feeling that they can expand on their share creative ideas are often hindered

With a creative environment will foster a passionate engagement from the employees.  When businesses fail to recognize this important social trait it can lead to a social strain. The workplace environment is just as important about an employee's health and their ability to perform their jobs and creative thought as is an employee's home life.

  1. Cindy Peck – Discuss how creativity can be measured.
There can be formal measurements and statistics calculated in order to measure creativity, but it is difficult because it is an abstract thing. One informal method is to measure by fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration (Kerr, 2020).

While in a brainstorming session creativity can be measured by gauging fluency. Fluency would be how many responses are the individuals giving. Are they freely and in quantity originating ideas? In that same forum, flexibility can be measured by noting how many different or new categories of responses are being offered. Originality would be a major indication of creativity as it shows if they are thinking out-of-the-box. Finally, notice if the members are elaborating in detail with their ideas.

    1. Cindy Peck - Interviews

      Interviewee Name: Randy B. & Melissa P.

      • What is creativity and how does it apply to teamwork?

(RB) It is being able to put all the moving parts of an endeavor together to make it work.
it pulls the group together with common agreements

(MP) It is coming up with new ideas by thinking outside the box and bring them into an actuality.
It encourages others and we then feed off of each others creativity which creates even more creative ideas

      • How does creativity help with problem solving on your team?

(RB) It assists greatly in problem solving on the projects. It also gets applied when dealing with demanding customers and stakeholders.

(MP) Problems often come up unexpectedly and it forces a fast creative solution. The problem must be solved rapidly while still getting the rest of the work done. We cannot spend so much time on the problem that it impacts the other work which would cause even more problems. It is also useful when solving problems due to funds and deadlines.

      • What roadblocks do you encounter when trying to offer creative ideas on a team?

(RB) At times there can be an initial resistance to a change in the “way we have always done it”. We work through that but initially it can be a roadblock. Also run into time deadlines as we have to get things done fast. It doesn’t seem to allow much time for creativity.

(MP) There have been times when some team members are not on board and will cause problems with getting creative ideas. There can be disagreements and creative differences.

      • Does your team have a process for identifying and encouraging creativity?

(RB) Usually it is done in a brainstorming format where there is no bad idea.

(MP) When a project or activity is going to be taken on, we have a meeting and brainstorm ideas on how to approach it. Planning into the future which gives more time to achieve the creative ideas.

      • What could your team do to enhance creativity?

(RB) By thinking outside the box more often. Be a better listener making it safe for new ideas to come up.

(MP) More meetings where we come up with new product ideas and planning for future projects.

  2. Team Creativity Threats
Threats can be internal or external barriers to team creativity. These threats can stifle, and even worse, eliminate creative opportunities within a team or organization. Identifying and removing these creative thinking barriers is vital to successful teamwork and the brainstorming of fresh new ideas.
    Internal Barriers
Diversity has a tendency to be a road block because of the different cultures and beliefs. Creative ideas may not be shared due to the fear of being criticized or harshly judged (Sieczka, 2011). Other cultures may find it hard to understand another’s beliefs and be overly critical. Management needs to encourage diversity in the workplace to overcome this cloudiness.
    External Barriers
Teams could have creative thinkers, but if organizational policies and procedures restrict the freedom to be creative then this will hinder the sharing of new innovative ideas that could benefit the team, project, and organization. Management should put processes in place that inspire creativity and the sharing of new ideas.

Workplace creativity is something that I have never given much thought to when it comes to the ability of the company to be able to be productive and profitable. Sure, you can measure creativity and I know that there is testing that can help to determine what a person's social and personality traits are.  The four conceptual domains into which new ideas can be classified are creative realism, conservative realism, creative idealism, and conservative idealism. Realism focuses on the structure of an idea, something that can be actually formed with factual thought.  Idealism is often detached and sometimes has a tendency to have an emotional connection that perpetuates the differences between realism and idealism.  Then you have creativity and conservativism. Conservative viewpoints are often followed by a traditional role and are not one that tends to branch out and come up with new ideas.  This type of thinking is one that does not like change and will try and st...
